The Process: Boundary – City of Madness
Music Video
All starts with the song and the lyrics, paying attention to the theme, tempo and interesting audio moments.
###
the lyrics:
– City of madness –
I walked into a Bar
Saw a glass of Whiskey
Sculled drink down my throat
But still felt thirsty
Corrosion of function
Not worth of supervision
Consummation and tension
The state of population
Walking down the hallway
Through city of madness
Seeking for intoxication
Just one step away
I’m in, I am the game
I’ll win and do it all
Do it all over again
Crawling on the floor in pain
Searching for my dose every day
Burden for identity
Ending in philosophy
Sensation of frustration
No one to help suspicious
Consummation, elimination
The end of fabrication
Walkin down the hallway
Through the city of madness
Seeking for intoxication
Just one step away
I’m in, I am the game
I’ll win and do it all
Do it all over again

Then comes the band itself.
The looks, the personality and the vibe.
Looking for the cool stuff I could use.
###
What was available to us: 2 locations (bars), people, fog machine, some lights.
###
Input from the band: …Red Fang stuff…hot chicks…bar fight scene…and that kind of shitz…
###
bring it on!
###
Based on everything, after brainstorming, overconsumption of coffee, listening to the song on the loop until “the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas” and typical blood sacrifice, the story is finally written, paying attention to character’s motivations, the 3-act structure etc.
###
The script is developed.
###
###
Based on the script the storyboards are developed and everything is presented to the band for approval.
###
The band gives a green light.
###
The pre-production begins.
People, locations, equipment.
Meetings, scheduling, booking etc.
###
People
The Band
The Director of Photography and the Director
The Main Character
The Dancers
The Office People
The Bar People
###
I love to add female hands and/or eyes in one way or another to all my projects if it’s appropriate.
###
Equipment
Camera, lights, smoke machine, food etc.
Fake blood made out of corn syrup and food colouring.
The white shirt, two ties and the nerd glasses were bought at a second-hand store. Between the two shooting days, the glasses got lost, so I had to buy a new pair.
Everything else was found on location.
###
Locations
The plan was to shoot at two bars in two days:
Battle Axe Rock & Metal Pub Vienna and The Church International Pub.
One week before the shoot the main location Battle Axe kinda got damaged by fire a bit (all good these days), so everything had to be shot at the Church.
Therefore, I had to make one location look like two bars, otherwise, the story would fall apart.
No time to think during the shoot usually, so I made a diagram with all the objects and people beforehand.
I split the bar with a fake wall into two parts and used the space as efficiently as possible.
Black cloth, duct tape and mirror effect for the win.
###
Day one: we shot the band, the dancers and the bar fight scene.
One week later on day two: we shot the office scene, reaction shots and the exterior.
###
I’ve written a shot list based on the script and the locations for the office/reaction/exterior scenes.
###
In the end, we get the footage and everything is edited.
###
After all editing, colour correction and grading we the have the final video.
